Vinyl Nitrile Sponge Gaskets

Also referred to as "expanded rubber" in the cellular rubber products industry, vinyl nitrile sponge gaskets and seals have cells that resemble balloons, which seal in gas as well as prevent moisture from escaping through the vinyl nitrile sponge material so long as the walls of its cells remain intact. This makes A.J. Rubber & Sponge Ltd.'s vinyl nitrile sponge gaskets and seals extremely versatile for use in a number of commercial or industrial applications. Other intrinsic features of our vinyl nitrile sponge gaskets and seals are:

• Application temperature range of -40°C to 82°C (-40°F to 180°F)
• Slightly lower density profile than most other closed cell sponge products
• Slightly higher water absorption properties than closed cell neoprene rubber materials

To manufacture vinyl nitrile sponge for use in our vinyl nitrile sponge gaskets and seals, raw compounds are combined using the same type of equipment used to mix solid rubber compounds. A chemical blowing agent is added, and using the correct combination of pressure and heat (during the pre-curing or pre-forming process), the chemical blowing agent decomposes and mixes with the rubber compound to generate nitrogen gas. As this occurs, the batch is placed into an oven and expands into a bun anywhere from 2" to 4" thick.
